Tips for Organizing Baby Clothes

The pregnancy test was positive and almost immediately, your best friend, mother and mother-in-law set to planning showers. Amongst the lovely gifts you’ll receive will be loads of baby clothes: little outfits, socks, sleepers and onesies galore. That’s on top of sale items you’ve spied at the store and the hand-me-downs from your sister. Soon, your baby’s nursery starts to look like an overrun laundromat in need of some organization.

The first step is to sort the bounty of clothing by size and then into what you are definitely keeping and what you may donate. Then, sort again into these groups: bulky items, dresser drawer items and closet items. Items that are sized too big can be easily stored in cardboard boxes, canvas boxes, or plastic totes and put in the closets or under the bed. You should indicate what sizes and what season is inside to avoid pilfering those boxes later to figure it out. Remember, newborns grow through sizes unbelievably fast, so the smaller sizes need to be stored in an easily accessible place.

If you choose to hang your baby’s clothes, dividers are a must. Simple dividers can be purchased or even made from cardboard and will help you keep sizes, seasons and even types of garments separated. In the baby’s dresser, drawer dividers or organizers will save your sanity during a middle-of-the-night accident. Organize each drawer with sections for items like onesies, socks, bibs and sleepers. Using dividers makes it a cinch for anyone to put away the baby’s clothes or quickly find a needed item. Bulky items such as hats, jackets, coats and sweaters can be stored either on hooks on the back of the nursery door or in a nice basket in the top of the closet. Using these simple steps will help you organize and keep all the baby’s little clothes neat and tidy.
